Reflection Paper – Continuing Nursing Education

Discuss your options in the job market based on your educational level.

With my educational level, I have various options in the job market. The nursing profession has endless opportunities, and most specialties are in high demand in the job market. According to Carnevale et al. (2015), the economy would create more than 1.6 million job openings for nurses, but there will be insufficient nurses to fill these openings. The researchers estimate that as at 2020, there is a shortage of around 200,000 nursing professionals. As such, the career has many opportunities for nurses with different qualifications. Based on my educational level, some of the available options include pursuing a career as a physician’s office nurse, ambulatory settings nurse, community and public health centers nurse, long-term care facilities nurse, school nurse, home healthcare nursing services, or even working in nursing homes. In the future, as I achieve more qualifications, I will have more opportunities, including advancing to a nurse manager.

Review the IOM Future of Nursing Recommendations for achieving higher levels of education.

Based on the IOM future of nursing recommendations, I plan on pursue various advanced degrees and professional certifications to enhance my progression in the nursing profession. I hope to become a family nurse practitioner in the future. The educational requirements for this profession including a bachelor’s degree in nursing, NCLEX-RN for one to become a licensed registered nurse, and a Master’s Degree in Nursing – Family Nurse Practitioner (MSN-FNP). I will also work towards getting family nurse certification from ANCC to increase my job prospects. Moreover, I hope to accomplish these qualifications within a period of five years.

Discuss how increasing your level of education would affect how your competitiveness in the current job market and your role in the future of nursing.

Increasing my level of education will significantly increase my competitiveness in the job market and increase my chances of getting my ideal nursing role in the future. According to the American National University (2017), the demand for qualified nurses continues increasing, and it projects that demand will increase by 19% based on the data provided by the Bureau of Labor Statistics. However, one of the key determinants of success in the field is having higher qualifications. To have a better chance of working in the preferred environment or setting, it is imperative to have higher qualifications. The nursing profession is increasingly becoming competitive, thus the need to be prepared to succeed in the field. This is through the achievement of the relevant educational qualifications and certifications.

For instance, a few years back, an associate’s degree in nursing was the preferred qualification for many healthcare organizations. However, currently, studies have shown that there is an increasing push for nurses to possess a minimum of a BSN in nursing in all healthcare settings, and in particular, in hospitals, are preferring to higher nurses who have a bachelor’s degree (Jimenez, 2015). Such shows that with more educational qualifications, the job prospects increase since employers are preferring more qualified professionals due to the associated benefits, such as improved patient outcomes. Moreover, in my preferred future role as a family nurse practitioner, it is integral to have advanced qualifications and the relevant certifications to get a job and excel in the area.

Discuss the relationship of continuing nursing education to competency, attitudes, knowledge, and the ANA Scope and Standards for Practice and Code of Ethics.

Continuing nursing education is associated with increasing competency, knowledge, enhanced attitudes, and a better understanding of standards of practice and the code of ethics for nurses. Nursing competency includes various elements, which are the capacity to understand people, which include the application of knowledge and the building of interpersonal relationships (National American University, 2018). Another component of nurse competency is the provision of people-centered, which has components such as practicing ethically, providing nursing care, and collaborating with other healthcare professionals (Duquesne University, 2019). It also involves the capacity to enhance nursing quality, which includes the expansion of professional capacity as well as ensuring that the provided nursing services are of high quality (Jimenez, 2015). Therefore, continuing education assists nurses to improve on these areas, which ultimately leads to improved quality of services and enhances patient outcomes.

Furthermore, I feel that continuing education also assists nurses in fulfilling their professional responsibilities. For instance, they with more competency, they are able to address patient needs in a better manner by observing professional standards and ethics, while at the same time collaborating well with other professionals, and building a positive relationship with patients (Jimenez, 2015). Multiple studies have shown that there is a close link between patient outcomes and continuing nursing education. For instance, it enhancing nursing diagnostics, the ability of nurses to support caregiving and it results in positive changes in the behavior, attitudes, and practice of nurses. Besides, continuing nursing education also enhances nurses’ critical thinking abilities (National American University, 2018). Thus, continuing nursing education is important since it results in improvements in the quality of care that nurses provide.

  1. Discuss whether continuing nursing education should be mandatory. Provide support for your response.

Continued nursing education should be mandatory for there to be continuous improvements in the quality of provided nursing care services and patient outcomes. Nursing may be considered as a lifelong learning process. One can never learn everything in nursing schools. Moreover, the field of healthcare is continuously evolving and improving because of knowledge and technological advancements (Duquesne University, 2019). Some interventions or techniques that may have been effective and recommended may no longer be appropriate because of the changes in knowledge and technology. Continued nursing education can make all the difference regarding whether one applies the right techniques when providing nursing care. Evidence has shown that mortality rates reduce when nurses with higher education, or who have pursued continued education offer their nursing care. Besides, there are also improvements in quality of care and patient outcomes (Fukada, 2018).

Moreover, regulatory requirements are frequently updated. It is imperative for nurses to be aware of such regulatory changes, including understanding how they can affect their nursing practice. Other than regulations, techniques and methods applied in the field of healthcare are constantly changing. For instance, medical technologies are continuously changing, thus the need for nurses to have an understanding of the recommended practices with regard to the use of such technologies (Duquesne University, 2019). It is also important to note that some nursing assessment parts are often phased out or replaced with time. As such, it is imperative for a nurse to understand the assessments that are relevant to one’s patients, and to ascertain that they have not been replaced, amended, or phase out as standard of care (Fukada, 2018). Therefore, continuing nursing education should be mandatory since it affords nurses with the chance to continuously learn about changes in the health care sector, including the changes in the standards of care and regulatory requirements.
